I have a class that contains data in the form of a hash. The hash data is not really used by the class itself, but it is needed by other functions that need to reference the class.
Given that this is not a real hash but just a representation of a hash, how do I correctly implement thread safety? Or is this an issue that only exists when using true hashes?
You don't need to implement thread safety. The hash code is not being used, so thread safety is not a concern. If a thread modifies the hash code, it will not be visible to other threads, since each thread has its own copy of the hash code.
You could have the hash code as private and protected by a getter (or, if you prefer, just use one of the many C++11 ways to make all data private).

A hash code is not safe to use as the same across threads because you can generate collisions. The simplest way to do that is to change the hash code and then generate a hash collision.
This is just like, for example, when trying to implement true random numbers with your own generator. You need to have some way of generating the same seed across threads (or in your case, multiple threads), or you can get random numbers that will always be the same.
If you do need to use the hash code as the key to the hash, make sure to either protect the hash with a mutex or to do it in a thread safe way so that a collision doesn't happen.
